Joan Marie Payne, age 92, of Wayland, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at the Parkview Home in Wayland following a short illness.
General calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2017, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Private family interment will take place at Finley Cemetery. Joan was born October 29, 1924, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph P. and Lillie Belle (Wiggins) Sloat. She attended Country School near Richland, Iowa, and later attended school in Keosauqua, Iowa. Joan was united in marriage to Donald C. Payne on August 15, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Joan worked as a secretary at the Mental Health Institute in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, prior to her marriage. She was a member of the Finley Methodist Church where she was active in the Women's Society. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Marion Township Hobby Club. She enjoyed painting, fishing and she loved animals, especially horses, dogs and hummingbirds.
She is survived by her son, Russell Payne and wife Cheryl of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Sandy Beauchamp and husband Tom of Washington, Iowa; son, Gregg Payne of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald in 2000; and one brother, Keith Sloat.
