Joan Marie Moriarty, age 86, of Eddyville, Iowa formerly of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa following a brief illness.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 5th at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Troy Richmond officiating. The family will receive friends at St. James Church from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The family will also receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel in Eddyville, Iowa where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Joan was born May 29, 1925 in Brisbane, Australia the daughter of William and Ellen (Cavanagh) McDonald. She attended Catholic School in Brisbane, Australia. On August 5, 1944, Joan was united in marriage to LaRoy Moriarty in Brisbane. She has resided in Washington, Iowa since 1946 and most recently lived in Eddyville, Iowa since 2004.
While living in Australia, Joan was a hat designer and maker and continued that in Washington, Iowa. She and her husband operated the Maid Rite Restaurant in Washington and later owned and operated the Hub Restaurant for many years. Joan later worked at Hardees and McDonalds until her retirement.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and playing BINGO. Joan was an avid sports fan, enjoyed traveling to visit family and enjoyed spending time on the beach.
Joan is survived by her daughter Carol Moriarty of Napa Valley, California; daughter Ellen Greene and husband Gary of Eddyville, Iowa; son Roy Moriarty and wife Jane of Ottumwa, Iowa; daughter Joy Greenlee and husband Doug of Eddyville, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2002, seven brothers and one sister.
