James C. Rosien, age 81, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the M.L. McCreedy Home following a short illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Prairie Flower Baptist Church with Pastor Dave Cotner officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Jim was born May 3, 1934, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, the son of Foster and Flossie (Intermill) Rosien. Jim graduated from Ft. Dodge High School in 1952 and later graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1956. He received his Masters of Education from Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, Missouri, and attended graduate classes at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City. He was united in marriage to Janice Booth on June 10, 1956, at the Prairie Flower Baptist Church north of Washington.
Jim began his teaching career in Laurel, Iowa, where he taught for three years. He taught Industrial Arts in Washington, Iowa, from 1959 until his retirement in 1993. While in Washington he coached football and track and taught Drivers Education for 51 years. He also worked part time for Joe Falk Clothing Company for 25 years and officiated basketball games for many years. Following his retirement, Jim worked as a Crop Adjuster of Farm Bureau Insurance and worked part time at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home.
While in high school, Jim was involved in football, basketball and track. He received First Team All-Conference honors in basketball and earned First Team All-State honors in football. Jim continued his athletic career while at Iowa State Teachers College earning First Team All-Conference honors in football and he held the high jump record for many years at I.S.T.C.
Jim was an active member of the Prairie Flower Baptist Church where he was a Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Usher and was Co-Chair of the Building Committee. He was a charter member of Kiwanis Am'ers, a member of the Washington Golf and Country Club and the Washington Community Y. Jim's civic activities included his service on the Washington Parks Board for 33 years, serving on the Washington Main Street Board and being elected to the Washington County Board of Supervisors. He enjoyed going on bike rides, golfing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Rosien of Washington, Iowa; son, Jeff Rosien & wife Sue of Clive, Iowa; son, Joe Rosien of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Jane Hardy & husband Brian of Clive, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Ashley Rosien Shields & husband Ryan of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Morgan Rosien Schumacher & husband Brent of Harlan, Iowa; Jameson Rosien & wife Alex of West Des Moines, Iowa; Jaron Rosien of Washington, Iowa; Janae Rosien Kos & husband Braden of Urbana, Iowa; Trey Hardy and Eli Hardy of Clive, Iowa. Jim is also survived by five great grandchildren and three nieces: Carol Deckert & husband Garrett of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; Sue Dostal & husband Chuck of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Jodi Janke & husband Doug of Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Rosien.
