Jean Robertson, age 85, of Washington, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014, at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Bob Wollenberg and Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the Washington County Enrichment Foundation to assist Washington County children and families in need. Mary Jean Freshwaters was born December 8, 1928 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Willa (Gibson) Freshwaters. She was raised in Keota and moved to Washington with her family during her junior year of high school. She attended school in Keota, Iowa and graduated from Washington High School. She later graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in Economics. Jean was united in marriage to Robert L. Robertson on November 10, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa.
Jean was a full time mother and homemaker. She worked several jobs throughout the years and worked at the Washington Public Library for 15 years. She was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church, serving on many church committees and was a member of the church choir for seventy years. She was very active in many civic organizations. She served on the Board of Directors at the United Presbyterian Home since 1990, was past president of Planned Parenthood, helped organize the Cross Cultural Committee, and was a founding member of the Washington Betterment Committee. Jean served on the Washington Community School Board for twelve years, was a member of the Washington Community School District Foundation and was on the Washington Community Theater Board of Directors. She was a member of the Washington County Enrichment Foundation, the Washington Beautification Committee and Planning and Zoning.
Jean is survived by her husband, Robert, of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Katy Green and husband Russ of Lexington, Kentucky; son, Kim Robertson and wife Colleen of Peoria, Illinois; daughter, Nancy Detweiler and husband Mike of Keota, Iowa; daughter, Sara Hauer and husband Scott of Racine, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, John Freshwaters and wife Pat of Fredricksburg, Virginia; and brother, Jim Freshwaters and wife Shirley of Waterloo, Iowa;
She is preceded in death by her parents and her son, Patrick in 2014.
