Jean Annette Rietz, age 97, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Belmond, Iowa, died Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Halcyon House in Washington following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2018, at the Belmond United Methodist Church in Belmond, Iowa, with Pastor Leila Blackburn officiating. The family will be present to receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Interment will take place at the Graceland Cemetery in Rowan, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Women in Belmond, Iowa. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, is assisting the family with arrangements. Jean was born on December 16th, 1920, in Washington D.C. to parents Raymond and Anna Pritchett Williams. At the age of three the family moved to Flandreau South Dakota where her father became Superintendent of the High School. She graduated from High School at Flandreau and went to South Dakota State College for one year, and then transferred to General Beadle State Teachers College at Madison South Dakota where she obtained her Degree. She taught school in Clear Lake South Dakota for two years.
She married Lt. Paul A Rietz in Sioux Falls South Dakota on November 11th, 1945. They made their first home in Chicago Illinois where Paul was enrolled at the Illinois College of Optometry. In 1949 he graduated and they moved to Belmond, IA to open an optometric practice. They spent 51 years in Belmond.
After Paul's retirement in 2000, they moved to Washington Iowa to be close to their daughter Julie and son in law Terry Mangold. They built a new home in Washington and Paul and Jean lived there together until Paul passed away on December 13th, 2000. She later resided at the United Presbyterian Home and at the Halcyon retirement community in Washington where she was living when she passed away. Jean was thrilled to live long enough to get to know her great grandchildren.
Jean loved her home and family and was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of Belmond. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, and entertaining her friends. She loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed working in her flowers and became an avid bird watcher.
Jean is survived by her daughter Julie Rietz Mangold and her husband Terry of West Chester Iowa, grandson Adam Mangold and his wife Teresa of Kalona Iowa, granddaughter Joanna Mangold Hein and her husband Nathan of Marion Iowa, great grandchildren Vivian and Rowan Hein, Megan and Mackenzie Reuscher, two nephews Roger and Paul W. Rietz, two nieces, Carmen Jorgensen and Sheila Flatebo; as well as many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents;her husband Paul in 2000; and one brother, Roger Williams.
