Jean Morrison Macenski, age 78, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the United Methodist Church, with Pastor Alyssa Nantt officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church, National Public Radio, and the Washington Community Theater. Online condolences may be sent for Jean’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
Jean was born on February 16, 1948, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Edmund Dunham Morrison Jr. and Kathleen Wellman (Coffey) Morrison. She graduated from Washington High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Coe College. She later earned her master’s degree in education from Purdue University. On June 17, 1972, Jean was united in marriage to Dan Macenski in Washington, Iowa.
A lifelong educator, Jean taught fifth and 6th grades at St. James Elementary School for many years. She also served as the school librarian and taught in the preschool program at St. James. Jean was a faithful member of the Washington United Methodist Church. She was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed, and was active in Stephen Ministry and Meals on Wheels. Jean was also a member of Chapter O.C. of PEO and enjoyed participating in the Washington Community Theater. She loved music and sang in the Mt. Pleasant Chorale, the Washington Choral Society, and the United Methodist Church Choir. Jean was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Macenski of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Kathleen (Andy) Isaacson of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Daniel and Samson Isaacson; and three brothers, Ed Morisson III of Tucson, Arizona, Thomas (Helen) Morrison of Helena, Montana, and James (Jill) Morrison of Munster, Indiana.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, in 2025; her parents, Ed and Katy Morrison; and sister-in-law, Tatia.
