Janet Rae Shelman, age 69, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, October 10, 2015, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following a battle with cancer.

Calling hours will begin noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date. Janet was born March 5, 1946, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Willis F. and Opal L. (Hesseltine) Richards. She attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1964. Janet was united in marriage to George O. "Oggie" Shelman on October 18, 1964, in Washington, Iowa.

Janet worked as a meat clerk at the Hy-Vee Food Store in Washington until health forced her retirement in 2013. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and attending her grandchildren's many activities. Janet enjoyed gardening and antiquing with friends.

She is survived by her husband, George O. "Oggie" Shelman of Washington, Iowa; son, Todd J. Shelman of Washington, Iowa; son, Chris A. Shelman and wife Melanie of Riverside, Iowa; son, Brett A. Shelman and wife Michelle of Washington, Iowa; six grandchildren: Carly Shelman, Mady Shelman, Spencer Shelman, Brittany Sholl, Adison Shelman and Grant Shelman. She is also survived by two brothers, Jim Richards and wife Cheryl of Washington, Iowa; Joe Richards and wife Linda of Washington, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Al Maahs; and one brother, John Richards and his wife Sue.
