Obituary

Jane (Adams) Vetter, age 97, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, at St. James Catholic Church, with Fr. Dennis Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the church. There will be a Catholic Daughters Rosary beginning at 12:00 p.m. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nichols, Iowa. Memorials have been established for St. James School. Jane was born on January 28, 1929, in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Mary (King) Adams. She attended country school, Independence No. 6, for eight years. She completed high school in West Liberty and was proud to be the first girl from West Liberty to attend Girls State Camp. She later attended the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Iowa and Muscatine Community College. Jane was united in marriage to Virgil Vetter on May 31, 1952, at the home of Keith and Marla Vetter in Washington, Iowa.

Following college, Jane taught in West Liberty for a few years then went to teach in her old country school, Independence No. 6, for five years. She had always dreamed of going back and teaching in the same school she attended as a child. She also taught in Muscatine rural schools for six years, Kindergarten in Muscatine for one year and taught reading in West Liberty. She was also the main Substitute Teacher for 40 years in various schools, and volunteered teaching English to non-English speaking children in West Liberty.

Jane and Virgil lived in the Nichols area for nine years before moving to her family farm in West Liberty for 31 years. They later settled in Washington. Jane was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, the Adventures in Living Federated Club, and the bridge and pinochle club. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

She is survived by four sons: Steve (Kathy) Vetter of Washington, Iowa; Mark (Jan) Vetter of West Liberty, Iowa; Brian (Jennifer) Vetter of Boise, Idaho; and Scott Vetter and special friend Cindy of Ollie, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; son, Jeffrey; and grandson, Dane Vetter.
