Dr. James Stanley Jewell, age 94, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 9, 2019 at the Washington County Hospital.
Celebration of life services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Erin Kaye officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Washington American Legion Post 29. General calling hours will begin at noon on Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Jim was born August 11, 1925 in Spring Hill, Kansas, the son of Rev. James Porter and Charlotte Susan (Smith) Jewell. He graduated from high school in Fredericktown, Missouri in 1943. Following high school, Jim served honorably in the United States Navy. Following his time in the service, Jim graduated from Kansas State University with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He was united in marriage to Mary Helen Montague on December 28, 1947 in Anthony, Kansas.
Jim worked as a Veterinarian in Lone Tree in 1951 and in Crawfordsville from 1952 – 1971. He also owned Prescription Feeds in Crawfordsville from 1965 – 1990. In 1990, Jim relocated to Branson, Missouri for several years and settled in Washington, Iowa in 2004. He was a member of the United Church of Crawfordsville until 1975 and then became a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington. He was a member of the Branson Presbyterian Church during his time in Branson. Jim was a Charter member of the Crawfordsville Lions Club and a member of the Crawfordsville American Legion.
He is survived by his children: Terri Willard and husband Gary of Chillicothe, MO; David Jewell and wife Lisa of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Mary Lou Saforek and husband Leland of Wayland, IA; Jim Jewell and wife Pam of San Antonio, TX; and Randy Jewell and wife Melissa of Henderson, CO; daughter-in-law, Marty Jewell of Arvada, CO; 10 grandchildren: Rebecka (Red) Benoit, Aaron Jewell, Luke (Erin) Jewell, Benjamin (Tara) Jewell, Natalie (Michael) Bales, Shelly (David) Kubik, Morgan (Mat) Rechkemmer, Drew (Kirsten) Saforek, James Jewell and Jacob Jewell; 18 great-grandchildren: Campbell, McKenna, Violet, Henry, Evelyn, Vera, Cora, Eloise "Elle", Felix, Cecilia, Fiona, Gibson, Foster, Jolee, Brent, Simon, Kaydyn and Hudson; and sister, Charlotte Isabelle Wilson of Des Moines, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2006; son, Rev. Stan in 2017; sisters, Pauline (Clyde) Mouser and Grace (Robert Lee) Gates; and brother-in-law, Bob Wilson.
