Obituary

James Rolland Gallagher age 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 01, 2015, at his residence in Washington following a sudden illness.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington, Iowa, with Pastor Maureen Howard officiating. Calling hours will be held from noon until 5:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. James Rolland "Jim" Gallagher was born January 29, 1923, in Washington, Iowa the son of James Rolland and Lillian (Herr) Gallagher. He attended school in Washington, Iowa, and graduated from Washington High School in 1941. Jim was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Schmidt on November 25, 1954, in Washington, Iowa.

Jim served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 until 1945. He served in the South and Central Pacific and the islands of Vella Lavella, Bougainville and Iwo Jima where he received the Bronze Star. Jim was a charter member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He served on Church Council, the Building and Grounds Committee, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Jim was a member of the Marine Corps League. In addition to serving the community in many ways, Jim was a well-respected salesman at Paul's Shoe Store for 42 years retiring in 1988. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is survived by his daughter, Starr Henie and husband Arthur of Washington, Iowa; son, Michael James Gallagher of Hills, Iowa; son, Timothy Jay Gallagher and wife Joan of Bedford, Iowa; three grandchildren, ToniAnn Siegle and husband Tony of Ephratra, Pennsylvania; Nicholas Gallagher of Seattle, Washington; Paul Russell of Alaska; one great granddaughter, Jordyn Siegle; one brother, Robert Gallagher and wife Gertrude of Muscatine, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Eva Gallagher of Washington, Iowa.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, in 2002; brother, William "Bill" Gallagher; and five sisters, Geraldine Jewell, Dorothy Notier, Barbara Gallagher, Helen Carson and Betty Wells.
