Obituary

James Gilbert "Jim" Cavin, age 53, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota following a lengthy illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Troy Richmond officiating. Visitation will be held at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 3:30 until 7:30 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church with prayer services beginning at 7:30 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Jim was born October 3, 1958 in Washington, Iowa the son of Gilbert J. and Ethel Marie (Pepper) Cavin. Jim graduated from Washington High School in 1977. He was united in marriage to Lisa Greiner on July 10, 1982 in Wellman, Iowa.

Jim was employed by the Washington Community School District where he worked at Lincoln Elementary School for 34 years. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa, the Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Jaycees. He enjoyed working the sideline chains at Washington Demon Football games and also assisting with the long jump event at Washington Track and Field Meets. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and NASCAR fan. Jim enjoyed golfing, especially at the annual Lincoln School golf outing. He enjoyed fishing, biking, walking, mowing grass and shoveling snow. He was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed fixing things.

He is survived by his wife Lisa Cavin of Washington, Iowa; daughter Heather Cavin of Washington, Iowa; daughter Brittany Cavin and fiancé Ray Williams of Dickinson, North Dakota; daughter Meredith Runge and husband Aaron of Coralville, Iowa; son Michael Cavin and fiancé Rosalind Roberts of Ainsworth, Iowa; mother Ethel Hendrickson and step father Don of Washington, Iowa; sister Lavonne Van Horn and husband Paul of Aurora, Ohio; sister Loretta Boshart and husband Ed of Carlsbad, California; brother, Mark Cavin and wife Lori of Ainsworth, Iowa; brother, Larry Cavin and wife Deanna of Durant, Iowa; brother, Daniel Cavin and wife Julie of Victor, Iowa; brother Andrew Cavin and wife Ina of Independence, Missouri; step brother Michael Hendrickson and wife Karen of North Liberty, Iowa; and step brother Timothy Hendrickson. Jim is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Dennis and Lois Greiner of West Chester, Iowa; sister-in-law, Becky Wilson and husband Blake of Fredricksburg, Virginia; sister-in-law, Nancy Wilson and husband James of Kansas City, Kansas; brother-in-law, Dean Greiner of West Chester, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1981.
