Obituary

Jack Duane Helmick, age 60, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, December 9, 2013, at his residence following a brief illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2013, at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Interment will take place at a later date. Jack was born September 14, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of James Raymond and Lela Maude (Kimbrough) Helmick. He attended school in Burlington, Iowa, graduating in 1972. He was married to Debra Schiferl, and later married Beth Snakenberg. Jack was united in marriage to Debra "Deb" Arnold on December 12, 1986. He has resided in Washington since 1988.

Jack worked at WCDC in Washington for many years and was a service coordinator for Systems Unlimited. He worked as a shift manager at McDonalds while living in Burlington. He was a quiet, caring person who found a way to help many people both in his work and at home. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his favorite characters on Duck Dynasty.

He is survived by his wife, Deb Helmick of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Jamie Helmick of Iowa City, Iowa; son, John Helmick of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Catherine Willis and husband Marshall of Lester Prairie, Minnesota; son, Joshua Helmick and wife Jenny of Danville, Iowa; daughter, Jaclyn Bernand of Burlington, Iowa; 7 grandchilden: Devin Helmick, Shelby Russell, Madison Helmick, Britnie Helmick, Ethan Bernand, Bethannie Bernand, and Harlan Bernand. Jack is also survived by sister, Lela C. Tull of Burlington, Iowa; sister, Patricia Boney of Terrell, Texas; and brother, Thomas Helmick and wife Sue of Burlington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters: Maxine Schaefer, Karen Sue Soule, Carol Warth, Mary Hammond, and Helen Riley; and four brothers: Dale Helmick, David Helmick, James Helmick, and John Helmick.
