Inez Marie Loomis, age 100, of Washington, died Saturday, February 06, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Home after declining in health.
Calling hours will be held from 9:00 am until 10:30 am Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place 11:00 am at the Friends Cemetery in Richland, Iowa. Memorial services will be held 1:30 pm Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church or the Washington Public Library. Inez was born April 29, 1909 in Packwood, Iowa the daughter of Arthur and Hilma (Sable) Loomis. She graduated from Packwood High School and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Inez later received her Masters Degree from Drake University.
Inez taught Math in the Des Moines Public School System for over 30 years retiring in 1974. Following her retirement she worked at the Kirkwood Community College Adult Literacy Department for nearly 20 years. In her early years, she taught in country schools in Keokuk and Jefferson Counties, and also taught in Colfax, Iowa and Downers Grove, Illinois.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the AAUW. She was a life member of the Retired Teachers Association of Iowa where she served on the Executive Board and was also a life member of the National Retired Teachers Association. Inez was an accomplished seamstress and quilted for nearly 80 years. In recent years, she crocheted infant caps for newborns at the Washington County Hospital. In her retirement years, Inez attended many Elder Hostels and traveled to Machu Pichu, Peru; the Galapagos Islands and Australia.
She is survived by one nephew Ed Augustine and his wife Gwen of Ames, Iowa; and one niece Janet Ferguson of Pueblo, Colorado.
Inez was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Pearl Loomis and Vera Augustine.
