Hubert Alvin Bruty, age 70, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011 at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Troy Richmond officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 Friday evening. Prayer services will be held 8:30 p.m. at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. A general memorial has been established. Hubert was born March 3, 1941 in Washington, Iowa the son of Walter Hubert and Evelyn Loraine (Wallace) Bruty. He attended Red Brick Country School and graduated from Washington High School in 1959. Hubert was united in marriage to Sherrill Lee Malley on October 8, 1960 in Keota, Iowa.

Hubert owned and operated Bruty's Carpet Corner in Washington for 42 years and Bruty's Carpet Corner in Sigourney for 23 years. Prior to being drafted into the United States Army in 1966, he owned and operated a grocery store in West Chester, Iowa. Hubert was a member of the Washington and Sigourney Chamber of Commerce for many years. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was a generous man always willing to give to anyone in need. He enjoyed camping, and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by four children: son, Brett Bruty; daughter Heather Leyden and husband Chad; son Ryan Bruty and wife Nicole; daughter Tiffany Whisler and husband Jason all of Washington, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Paiton, Kendal, Maclain, Halle and Ella Leyden; Maya and Morgan Bruty; and Grant and Jax Whisler; brother Bob Bruty and wife Mary of Washington, Iowa; brother Frank Bruty and wife Kirtene of Washington, Iowa; sister Ellen Osborn and husband Ernie of Milan, Illinois; sister Rita Mathes and husband Bill of Burlington, Iowa; brother-in-law Gerald Cherryholmes of Denton, Texas; sister-in-law Marilee Bruty of Washington, Iowa; brother-in-law Bill Malley and wife Mary of Keota, Iowa; brother-in-law Rob Malley of Swisher, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Hubert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sherrill Lee in 1994, and one sister Elizabeth "Betty" Cherryholmes in 2006.
