Obituary

Herbert L. Hammen, age 93, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, April 6, 2020, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa, of natural causes.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time.

Private family graveside services will be held at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Retrieving Freedom Foundation in Waverly, Iowa or House of Heroes in Washington, Iowa. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Herb was born July 8, 1926, in Harper, Iowa, the son of Charles E. and Mamie (Peiffer) Hammen. Herb attended St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Harper, Iowa, and graduated from St. Elizabeth in 1944. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corp during from 1944 until 1946 in the 4th Marine Division. Following his time of service, Herb was united in marriage to Nadine Klein on April 29, 1947, in Harper, Iowa.

Herb farmed north of Washington until 1974 and later was a truck driver for Exporter Elevator in West Chester, Iowa. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Farm Bureau and the Marine Corp League. Herb enjoyed woodworking and took pleasure in sharing his finished products with his family. He was a member of the Frontier Coffee Club.

He is survived by daughter, Anita Seeger and husband Ken of Waverly, Iowa; daughter Denise Hammen of Iowa City, Iowa; granddaughter, Andrea Parizek and husband Bert of Clutier, Iowa; brother, Justin Hammen of Sigourney, Iowa; brother, Harold Hammen and wife Donna of North Liberty, Iowa; sister-in-law, Martha Hammen of Washington, Iowa; and friend, Jean Bates of Washington, Iowa.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nadine in 1999; infant son, Stephen; infant sister, Elenor; brother, Charles who died in active duty; brother, Leonard Hammen; sister, Mary Sieren; and brother, Paul Hammen.
