Rev. Herbert R. Gould, age 90, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines following a brief illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. on the same date at the same location. Interment with military honors will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Wesley Acres Gratuity Fund, which benefits the direct caregivers at Wesley Acres, where Herbert received their kind and loving care. Herbert was born January 29, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Clem and Nora (Harris) Gould. He graduated from Winston High School in Winston, Missouri. He attended Central Missouri College and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1945. Herbert served in the Navy during World War II where he was an Assistant Navigator on the Phaon supply and repair ship. Following his time in active duty, he served in the Naval Reserves where he attained the rank of Lt. Commander and served as a Naval Chaplain. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Darnel on September 7, 1946 in Washington, Iowa. Following his marriage, Herbert attended Asbury Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky, where he received his Bachelors of Divinity degree.
Rev. Gould was a United Methodist Minister in the Iowa Annual Conference for almost fifty years. He served congregations in Coin, New Sharon, Missouri Valley/Modale, Oakland, Hawarden/Ireton, Des Moines (Union Park Methodist Church), New London and Marshalltown (Bethany and Morrow churches). Following his retirement in 1998, Herbert and Dorothy moved to Des Moines where he volunteered as a Chaplain at Wesley Acres for ten years. He was an active member of the Sertoma Club for many years. Herbert faithfully supported his children and grandchildren in their varied musical and athletic endeavors.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gould of Des Moines, Iowa; son, Gene Gould and wife Judy of Bedford, Texas; son David Gould of Chicago, Illinois; daughter, Marilyn Maurer and husband Myron of Winfield, Illinois; daughter, Emily Chafa and husband Brad of Johnston, Iowa; son, Phil Gould and wife Elizabeth of Chicago, Illinois; eight grandchildren: Dylan, Bevan, and Madelyn Gould; Brian, Eric and Hagan Maurer; Alex and Shane Chafa; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Bollinger of Ventura, California; brother, Richard Gould and wife Lucy of Chico, California; sister, Mary McLean of Portland, Oregon; and brother, Charles Gould and wife Ditas of Las Vegas, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Martha Groves.
