Helen "Jean" Stout-Rathmel, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the United Presbyterian Home after failing in health for several months.
Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Darryl Carr. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 28th at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Iowa Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Helen Jean Stout-Rathmel was born October 9, 1920 in Bonaparte, Iowa the daughter of Clinton Elmer and Mabel (Morris) Huff. She graduated high school in Bonaparte, Iowa and later attended Iowa Wesleyan College. She was united in marriage to Ralph W. Stout on May 22, 1941, and was later married to Harold Rathmel in June of 1992 at the First Baptist Church in Washington, Iowa.
Jean had been a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1951. She lived in Bonaparte, Iowa from 2001-2008 to be closer to family, and she had resided at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington since 2008. She taught at country schools in Washington County and worked at Hy-Vee for several years. She later worked in the office of Drs. Harris, Leary, and Eicher until her retirement.
Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington and enjoyed participating in church events. She loved spending time with her family and friends and her beloved cat, Sunshine. After her retirement, Jean enjoyed traveling to Texas for the winter to spend time with her family.
Jean is survived by son Richard Stout and wife Phyllis of Bonaparte, Iowa and Mission, Texas; daughter Mary Ellen Robison of Mission, Texas; step-daughter Neva Rathmel of Iowa City, Iowa; step-daughter Alberta Bonar of Washington, Iowa; two grandchildren: Chris Stout and wife Marcy of Washington, Iowa and Jill Robison-Newman of San Marcos, Texas; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; sister Marianne Schrepfer and sister-in-law Dorothy Huff, both of Keosauqua, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Ralph in 1969; her second husband Harold in 1998; two granddaughters: Pamela Stout and Toni Robison-Martinez; three brothers and five sisters.
