Heidi Kaufman, age 79, of Washington died Sunday July 4, 2010 at her residence following a sudden illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Thursday July 8th at the St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Troy Richmond officiating. Visitation will begin noon Wednesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Wednesday evening. Prayer services will be held 7:00 pm Wednesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Crawfordsville Cemetery in Crawfordsville, Iowa. Heidi was born January 22, 1931 in Luzerne Switzerland the daughter of Josef and Hedwig (Wyss) Wulser. She attended school in Switzerland. Heidi moved to the United States in 1952. She received her LPN training from Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado and later received her RN training from El Paso Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Heidi was united in marriage to John Bieri on February 14, 1953 and later married Richard Kaufman on December 7, 1979 in Crawfordsville, Iowa.
Heidi worked as a surgical nurse for many years in Colorado Springs. After moving to Washington, Iowa, Heidi worked as a nurse with the Head Start program. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and volunteered many hours at Halcyon House and the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. She served on the Board of Directors for the Washington County Mini Bus. Heidi was featured on Iowa Public Television's special "Over 70". She enjoyed playing the accordion and yodeling for family and friends. She attended the Wednesday study club in Crawfordsville for many years.
She is survived by her son Mark Bieri and wife Ann of Las Cruces, New Mexico; son Jeff Bieri and wife Ashley of Colorado Springs, Colorado; step daughter Iris Encke and husband Bill of Dubuque, Iowa; step son Bruce Kaufman and wife Jenny of Crawfordsville, Iowa; step son Neil Kaufman and wife Linda of Ankeny, Iowa; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as her special friend, Bryce Lord of Washington. Heidi is also survived by one brother Ruedi Wulser and one sister Annemarie Wulser both of Luzerne, Switzerland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard Kaufman in 2004, and seven brothers and sisters including Josef Wulser, Gary Wulser, Edith Meier-Wulser, Tony Wulser, Teri Grieder-Wulser, Hanny Stohler-Wulser and Rita Davis.
