Obituary

Hazel Johnson, age 94, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington surrounded by her family.

Celebration of life services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Washington with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Friday, October 27, 2017, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Hazel was born July 17, 1923 in Putnam County, Missouri, the daughter of Loyd and Dovie Catherine (Ruggles) Bradshaw. She graduated from Washington High School in 1943. Hazel was united in marriage to Charles L. Johnson on September 11, 1943 in Kalona, Iowa.

Hazel worked for the American Pearl Button Factory, McCleery-Cummings Calendar Factory and Ross Manufacturing. She also worked as a nurse's aid for the United Presbyterian Home and the County Home. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she served on several committees. She was also a member of the Joann Vaughn Women's Missionary Circle and was a volunteer for Hospice of Washington County for many years. Hazel enjoyed gardening and was a gracious hostess with a deep devotion to her family.

Hazel is survived by her children: Charlene Van Est of Muscatine, IA; Judi Duncan and husband Larry of Liberty, MO; Kirk Johnson and wife Susan of Des Moines, IA; Susan Gloyer of Washington, IA; and Lori Krieger and husband Dave of Muscatine, IA; 13 grandchildren: Gene, David and Lance Arnold, Darin Van Est, Derek Duncan, Holly Hunt, Jeremiah, Justin, Quinn and Carolyn Johnson, Jessica Gloyer, Amber Schulte and Fauna Fry; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; and siblings: Betty Greene, Hollis "Doc" Bradshaw, Ruth Dunston, Nancy Schoonover, Shirley Hahn and two infant siblings.
