Obituary

Harold Verland Gilliand, age 87, of Ainsworth, Iowa died Monday, April 26, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 pm Saturday, May 1, at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Kelly Allard officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 Friday evening. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. A general memorial has been established. Harold was born November 1, 1922 in Bunch, Iowa the son of Zeona Leona "Zim" and Hattie (Benge) Gilliland. He attended Benton Country School in Davis County and later attended Bloomfield High School. Harold was united in marriage to Florence Henderson on January 28, 1942 in Lancaster, Missouri.

Harold has lived in Washington County since 1942 where he farmed until his retirement in 2002. He raised purebred registered Angus cows. He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, the Southeast Iowa Angus Association and the Iowa Cattleman's Association. He was active in sports while in high school and was a letter winner in football. He enjoyed country music and loved woodworking.

He is survived by his wife Florence Gilliand of Ainsworth, Iowa; three daughters Georgia Gilliand of Ainsworth, Iowa; Maralyne Moody of Ainsworth, Iowa; and Nancy Gilliand of Ainsworth, Iowa. Harold is also survived by his grandchildren Kirk Krauel of Florida; Janette Krauel of Florida; Colette Prybil of Ainsworth, Iowa; Christopher Gilliand and wife Sandi of Hephzibah, Georgia; great grandchildren Bren Raschke of Moline, Illinois and Corbin Gilliand of Georgia as well as one brother Richard Gilliland of Ottumwa, Iowa and one sister Phyllis Davis and husband Kenneth of Decatur, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son Boyd Gilliand in 1969; grandson David Krauel in 1994; two brothers Raymond and John Gilliland; and one sister Erma Milosevich.
