Gwen Kay Baumert Thyen, age 73, La Porte City, Iowa, formerly of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at La Porte City Specialty Care.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Interment will take place at the Keota Cemetery. Calling hours will begin 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with the family present to receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A general memorial has been established. Gwen was born December 15, 1950, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Jean (Patterson) Baumert. Gwen graduated from Washington High School in 1969 and attended college. She married Larry Thyen, but the couple later divorced.
Gwen worked at Federation Bank as a bank teller for many years before retiring. She was very active in the community, serving on the board of Washington County Hospice, volunteering at the Washington Community Y, and assisting the Washington Chamber of Commerce with special events.
She is survived by her daughters, Leslie (Aaron) Schaver of Waterloo, Iowa, and Laura Jones of Union Grove, Wisconsin; six grandsons: Keenan (Michaela Stanerson) Thyen, Kolten Thyen-Pennington, Ian (Emily) Schaver, Evan Schaver, Rashawn Thyen, and D'Anthony Thyen; five great-grandchildren (soon to be six); step-mother Irene Baumert of Burlington, Iowa; sisters Karen Baumert of North Liberty, Iowa, and Sara Starr of Iowa City, Iowa; brothers Mark Baumert and Tracy Baumert, both of Washington, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Jean, and brother, Eric Baumert.
