Gilbert Alex Wood, age 88, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at his residence following a short illness.
Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Herb Yoder officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Friday evening. Interment with military honors conducted by Ainsworth American Legion Post 351 will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. Gilbert was born May 15, 1924 in Elkport (Clayton County), Iowa the son of Roy Eugene and Alma LeVesta (Riegel) Wood. He attended school in Ainsworth, and graduated from Ainsworth High School. Gilbert was united in marriage to Dolores Darlene Stewart on December 10, 1950.
Gilbert had lived in the Ainsworth and Washington communities for most of his life. He farmed northeast of Washington, and worked as an insurance adjuster for Farmers Mutual Hail. He also managed the airport and gave flying lessons.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Washington. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge; Chapter and Commandery where he was Past Grand Officer of Grand Commandery; the Ainsworth chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where he was Past Patron; K.A.A.B.A Shrine and the White Shrine He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Ainsworth American Legion Post 351.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Dolores, of Washington; son Robert Duane Wood of Ainsworth, Iowa; son Ronald James Wood of Sedalia, Missouri; son Richard Steven Wood and wife Debra of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren: Alexia Carla Wood, James David Wood, and Steven Alex Wood; one great-granddaughter Anastazia Chanel Wood; brother Willard Leroy Wood and wife Linda of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister Betty Lou Stewart and husband Robert of Riverside, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mabel Wood of Ainsworth, Iowa; and brother-in-law, James Porter of Seymour, Tennessee; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Norman F. Wood, Glen D. Wood, and Joe Wood, and sisters Julia Polito and Bonnie Jean Porter.
