Gilbert Simon Kueneman, age 98, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, formerly of Washington, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Celebration of life services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 am Tuesday morning at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Gilbert was born September 3, 1917, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Edward and Sophia (Schnoeblen) Kueneman. He attended school in Riverside, Iowa. Gilbert was united in marriage to Ramona Malmberg and they divorced. He later married Bettie Mae Freel on December 31, 1969 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gilbert served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He was a construction foreman during his time in the Army. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal. Gilbert farmed all of his life in the Riverside and Washington communities before retiring in 1998.

He is survived by four step children: Richard Freel Jr. of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Cathy McComas and husband Roger of Chico, California; Linda Hagers and husband August of Farmington, Arkansas; Allen Freel and wife Sandi of Grandy, Missouri; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2009; one daughter, Janeane Kueneman; one grandson, Richard Wayne Freel III; and five siblings: Harold (Pauline) Kueneman, Gladys (Arthur) Hora, Vern (LaVerne) Kueneman, Rita (Wilbur) Rath and Marie (George) Hora.
