George Thomas Connelly, age 95, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, died peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2014, at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a lengthy illness.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Church of the Nativity in Dubuque, Iowa, with Fr. Scott Bullock officiating. Calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Prayer services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity on Thursday. Interment with military honors will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated for Iowa City Hospice or the Hospice of the donor's choice. George was born February 2, 1919, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of John Bernard and Mary Agnes (Sullivan) Connelly. He attended school in Dubuque, Iowa. George was united in marriage to Mary Jean Miller on June 22, 1957.
George worked as a firefighter of the City of Dubuque for 38 years until his retirement in 1979. He was a veteran of World War II serving honorably in the United States Army. George was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington and belonged to the Church of the Nativity while living in Dubuque. He liked working with his hands, tinkering and building things. He enjoyed spending time at his computer, photography, fishing and especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family.
He is survived by son, Michael Connelly of Washington, Iowa; son Thomas Connelly and wife Cathy of Coralville, Iowa; three grandchildren: Christopher Connelly; Steven Connelly and friend Vanessa Kinsley; and Rebecca Connelly; and two great grandsons: Brett and Bryan Connelly. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1969, and six siblings, Jim, John, Frank, Leo, Agnes and Margaret.
