Obituary

Floyd Shearer Black, age 91, of Washington, formerly of Burlington, Iowa died Thursday, February 04, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital.

Floyd was born March 31, 1918 in Atkinson, Illinois the son of Frank and Blanche (Shearer) Black. He graduated from Geneseo High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames. He was married to Evelyn Connelly who preceded him in death. Floyd was later married to Louvae Reddick on August 18, 1991 at the First United Methodist Church in Burlington with Rev. Bob Dodder officiating.

Floyd was an Engineer for the Natural Gas Pipeline for 39 years retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, Floyd and Louvae played music professionally as "The Entertainers" where Floyd played Bass and sang and Louvae played the keyboard. They performed on ten different cruise ships and at Sardi's in New York City. They performed weekly at Martini's and Pzazz Supper Clubs in Burlington, as well as Painted Mountain Golf Resort in Mesa, Arizona. Floyd and Louvae played annual concerts for five years at the Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, Arizona. In his earlier years he played music professionally with bands in the Chicago and Quad Cities areas.

He was a member of the Congregational Church. Floyd enjoyed music, fishing, cooking and painting with watercolor.

Floyd is survived by his wife Louvae Black of Washington, Iowa; step daughter Judi Fredrick and husband Bill of Washington; two step grandchildren, Todd Fredrick and wife Kim and their children Will and Lauren of Malvern, Pennsylvania; and Alicia Fredrick of Boulder, Colorado. He is also survived by one niece, Virginia Johnson of Geneseo, Illinois and one sister-in-law, Pat Earll of Mesa, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Evelyn, one son Richard Black, two sisters Barbara Cummings and Kathryn Black, and one brother Norman Black.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, February 7, 2010 at the Halcyon House Chapel with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating. Graveside services will be held at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola, Iowa in the spring of 2010. Memorials have been established for the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund.
