Evelyn Lucille Payne, age 95, of Washington, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the McCreedy Home in Washington.

A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Visitation will begin 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 7, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday evening. Interment will be held at Finley Chapel Cemetery in rural Trenton. Memorials have been established for Washington County Hospice and the McCreedy Home. Evelyn was born January 30, 1920, in Henry County, Iowa, the daughter of D. Dewey and Della Mae (Baker) Hookom. She was united in marriage to Robert F. Payne on January 28, 1938 in Memphis, Missouri.

Evelyn graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1937. She helped on the farm until moving to Fairfield where she worked at Jefferson County Hospital until her retirement. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by three sons: LeRoy Payne and wife Dorothy of Ft. Madison, IA; Glen Richard and wife Jean of Burlington, IA; Gerald D. "Butch" Payne and friend Barb of Burlington, IA; four daughters: Patricia Hinkel of Ottumwa, IA; Kathy Luhn and husband David of Fayetteville, AR; Donna Pacha and husband Dennis of Washington, IA; Janet Welder and husband David of Unionville, MO; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Anne Gott and husband Richard of Carrollton, TX; sister-in-law, Lois Hookom of Burlington, IA; brother-in-law, Bernard Payne; and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents; sister, Betty Walker; brother, Bill Hookom; daughter, Susan Kay; and one grandson.
