Obituary

Duane Lee Hagensick, age 81, of Washington, Iowa, died February 22, 2015 at the Washington County Hospital of congestive heart failure.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Maureen Howard officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Duane was born September 16, 1933 in Marquette, Iowa, the son of Leo and Amy (Wright) Hagensick. He graduated from Marquette Public School in 1951. Duane attended Luther College in Decorah for one year, and then transferred to Upper Iowa University in Fayette. He started teaching in Blairstown, Iowa in 1955. He taught 7th and 8th departmental and coached junior high boys basketball and varsity girls' basketball. He met his future wife in Blairstown where she was a 2nd grade teacher. Duane was united in marriage to Phyllis Willmott on August 18, 1956 at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown, Iowa.

Duane received his BA degree in1959 and he and Phyllis moved to Washington in 1961. There, he taught 7th and 8th grade social studies and elementary physical education. He moved into the new junior high building in 1962 where he taught physical education, geography and coached 9th grade football, 7th grade basketball, 8th grade track and varsity girls' basketball. Duane received his MA from Northeast Missouri State in 1970.

He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and was a registered baseball and softball official until retiring after 36 years. Duane was a member of Southeast Iowa Official Association of Mt. Pleasant and received a Lifetime Member of WEA, JSEA and NEA award in 1990. After 35 years of teaching, he retired in 1990. Duane was the recipient of the Governors Volunteer Award in 1993. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and a season ticket holder for 43 years, and was also a Chicago Cubs fan. He was faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington where he served as head usher for several years and served on the Building and Grounds Committee. Duane was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Duane is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hagensick of Washington, Iowa; son, Greg Hagensick and wife Sonya of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren: Katie Hagensick of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Trisha Hagensick of Mankato, Minnesota; and Tyler Hagensick of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; stepgranddaughter, Kalli Davis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother-in-law, Gene Willmott of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; niece, Stacey Willmott of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and nephew, Scott Willmott of Sioux City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles, cousins and a sister-in-law.
