Dorthea McDole, age 95, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the All American Care Center following a brief illness.
Private family graveside services will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the William J. and Dorthea McDole Scholarship Fund. Dorthea was born May 30, 1918, in Cincinnati, Iowa, the daughter of Everett and Ruth (Houdesheldt) Beatty. She attended school in Cincinnati and graduated from Washington High School in 1936. Dorthea later attended Washington Junior College in Washington, Iowa. She was united in marriage to William J. McDole on July 1, 1939 in Memphis, Missouri.
Dorthea lived most of her life in Washington, Iowa. She was a Bindery Supervisor at McCleery Cumming Company. She was proud to be the first female to hold a Supervisors position with the company. She retired after 45 years. Dorthea was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge and was past president of BPW (Business and Professional Women). She enjoyed scrapbooking, traveling and spending time at her cabin at Lake Odessa.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Ann Gugel and husband Donnie of Washington, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Lynn Neff, Angie Kempf and husband Kenny, Maryjo Rich and husband Matt, Jeff Goodwin and wife Angie, Amy Schulte and husband Dan, Wendi Neff-Ulin and husband Mike Ulin, B.J. Goodwin and Michelle McCarty; as well as 16 great-grandchildren.
Dorthea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1975; one son , Joe McDole; one daughter, Sarah Goodwin and her husband Ray; and one sister, Doris Delaney.
