Dorothy Luckenbill, age 97, of Washington died Friday July 16, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a decline in health.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:00 am Wednesday July 21, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Jean Wollenberg and Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 pm Tuesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for United Presbyterian Home, United Presbyterian Church, and Hospice of Washington County. Dorothy was born September 18, 1912 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of George F. and Mary (Cherry) Masson Sr. She graduated from Washington High School, Washington Junior College and Rock Island College of Business in Rock Island, Illinois. Dorothy was united in marriage to Lester H. Luckenbill on May 26, 1934 in Rock Island, Illinois. Dorothy worked as the society editor at the Washington Evening Journal for 17 years. She was also a homemaker and assisted her husband in their farming operation. Dorothy was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington where she was a Deacon and member of the UPW. She was very active in different church groups throughout the years. Dorothy was a member of Fortnightly, Rural Women's Club and D.A.R. She enjoyed reading and served as a volunteer reader. She also enjoyed music, playing piano and cello.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Hunsaker and husband Jim of Washington; son, Chuck Luckenbill and wife Meredith of Golden, Colorado; ten grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; son-in-law, Bob Brinning of Washington; brother, George Masson Jr. of Washington; and two sisters, Mildred Whitted of Clinton; and Esther Carstensen of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1999; and daughter, Cherry Brinning in 2006 and a granddaughter, Suzanne Horak in 1995.
