Dorothy Jean Jarrard, age 72, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at her residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Stiner and Rev. Dan Drost officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the Reformed Presbyterian Church. Dorothy was born February 7, 1942 in Ainsworth, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Mable (Morrison) Wilson. She graduated from Ainsworth High School and attended cosmetology school in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy was united in marriage to D. Gaylen Jarrard on June 6, 1964 at the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Washington.
Dorothy was life resident of Washington County living all of her married life north of Washington. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband with the family farm operation. Dorothy was a hairdresser in Iowa City prior to her marriage and later worked as a hairdresser for Richard George and Don & Ethel Dayton. She also worked at the United Presbyterian Home and the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington.
She was an active member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Washington where she taught Sunday School, held Women's Bible Study, was a Psalm Leader, and loved working with the children's programs. Dorothy loved singing the Psalms. She helped with Bingo at the McCreedy Home and Orchard Hill Res Care. She was known for making miniature pies and taking them to the residents of Orchard Hill on their birthdays.
Dorothy was a member of Fleur De Lis Neighborhood Club.
She is survived by her husband, Gaylen Jarrard of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Glenda Lehmberg and husband John of Lawrenceville, Georgia; son, Robert Jarrard and wife Dorcas of Washington, Iowa; son, Patrick Jarrard of Washington, Iowa; six grandchildren: Erin, Charis, Jeremiah, and Maria Lehmberg; and Micah and Emma Ruth Jarrard; brother, Don Wilson and wife Judy of Columbus Junction, Iowa; sister, Karen Todd and husband Gary of Columbus Junction, Iowa; and sister, Janice Skubal and husband John of Ainsworth, Iowa.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents.
