Dorothy A. Grim, age 89, of Washington, died Thursday, February 5, 2015, in Washington, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington. Visitation will begin 2:00 p.m. Sunday February 15th, at Immanuel Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends from 2:00-5:00 Sunday and 1 hour prior to the Monday service. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established to Immanuel Lutheran Church and Hospice of Washington County. Dorothy was born September 26, 1925, in Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Christina (Mohr) Rickertsen. She was educated in Clinton County. On August 13, 1944, she was united in marriage to Lester "Les" Grim in Charlotte, Iowa.
Dorothy & Les, along with Dorothy's brother, owned and operated G & R Grocery in Charlotte, Iowa. They later lived and farmed in Thomson, Illinois, and Preston, Iowa. They also lived in Keosauqua, Iowa, before moving to Washington in 1957.
While in Washington she worked at the McCleery Cumming Calendar Factory and the Washington Public Swimming pool. After Les's stroke, she assisted him with his Farm Bureau Insurance business.
Dorothy was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a member of Washington County Farm Bureau. She volunteered for several years at the Central Park Community Center. She enjoyed playing pinochle, baking, fixing scrumptious meals and helping Les with clock making and repair.
Dorothy is survived by daughter Barbara (Richard) Westpfahl of Roseville, MN; daughter Paula (Frank) Sanders of Fruitland, ID; daughter Sheryl (Don) Lewis of Washington, IA; son John (Peggy) Grim of Johnston, IA; and daughter Joyce (Marty) Westen of Washington, IA.
Dorothy delighted in her ten grandchildren: Mark Westpfahl of Roseville, MN; Kyle (Stacee) Sanders of Fruitland, ID; AJ (Kim) Lewis of Center Point, IA; Katie (Matt) McWhirter of Wayland, IA; Tina (Craig) Montz of Washington, IA; Jeremiah (Michelle) Johnson of West Des Moines, IA; Justin Johnson of Dallas, TX; Quinn (Nancy) Johnson of Hinsdale, IL; Madelyn Westen of Washington, IA; Vanessa Westen of Washington, IA; and her great-grandchildren: Amanda and Matt Westpfahl of Roseville, MN; Carlie and Mylie Sanders of Fruitland, ID; Caleigh, Brailey and Kolten Lewis of Center Point, IA; William and Lauren McWhirter of Wayland, IA; Lason Montz of Washington, IA; Joclyn Tracy of West Des Moines, IA; Audrey Johnson of Redmond, WA; and Josie Johnson of Hinsdale, IL.
Dorothy is further survived by sisters Lucille Schoolman of Clinton, IA, and Arlene (Ray) Eickstaedt of Davenport, IA, brothers-in-law Leslie Grim of Mt. Carroll, IL, and Larry (Nancy) Grim of Camanche, IA; and 38 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2008 and by 9 brothers and 1 sister: Maurius, Herbert, Arlo, Raymond, Walter, Marvin, Gerhardt, LeRoy, twin brother Delbert and Evelyn Witt.
