Donald Henry Monson, age 91, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Friday, September 2, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Don was born December 7, 1930, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Earl Conger and Mabel Henrietta (Crooks) Monson. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1948 and later graduated from Coe College. Don furthered his education by taking classes at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. Don served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1954.

He taught high school for three years in Hopkinton, Iowa, before teaching in the Iowa City Community School District. He taught at Central Jr. High School and Southeast Jr. High School until his retirement in 1994. Don had a long and storied career as a coach in the Iowa City Community School District, and the gym at Southeast Junior High bears his name.

Don was a member of the United Church of Crawfordsville, Washington Masonic Lodge #26, and the Crawfordsville American Legion.

Don is survived by his nephew, Charles Monson and wife Jessica and their children, Olivia and Iris of Savoy, Illinois; and niece Jane Monson and husband Thomas Welander of Greeley, Colorado.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Russell Wonderly Monson.
