Donald D. Gardner, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Parkview Home in Wellman following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Don was born January 12, 1922, in Washington County, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Opal (McBride) Gardner. He attended country schools in Washington County. Don was united in marriage to Ruth Powers on December 31, 1945.
Don was a life resident of Washington County. He worked as a machine operator at Cargill in Washington for 36 ½ years until his retirement in 1984. He also farmed and assisted local farmers with their farming operation. He had previously worked at the American Petroleum Service Station.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Washington, Iowa. Don enjoyed the outdoors and going for walks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing horseshoes.
Don is survived by his wife, Ruth Gardner of Washington, Iowa; son, Craig Gardner and wife Margean of Marion, Iowa; son, Steve Gardner and wife Connie of Norwalk, Iowa; son, Doug Gardner and wife Sheryl of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Tammy Goodwin and husband Gary of North Platte, Nebraska; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Lester Gardner of Iowa City, Iowa; sister, Mildred Kamper of Washington, Iowa; sister, Gladys Gardner of Washington, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Cloyd Gardner; and sister, Helen Tackenberg.
