Obituary

Donald L. "Mose" Shafer, age 75, of West Chester, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 from a 6 year battle with cancer.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Watson officiating. Calling hours will begin 12:00 p.m. Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will be held at the West Chester Cemetery in West Chester. Don was born November 1, 1940 in Washington, Iowa, the son of James Marion "Moon" and Worval Beatrice (Wilson) Shafer. He attended school in Washington. Don married Saundra Sinn in 1961 and they later divorced. He was united in marriage to Sandra (Patterson) Chalupa on August 4, 2002.

Don worked at the University of Iowa for 5 years and for Crane Valves in Washington for 34 years, until his retirement in 2002. He served on the West Chester City Council for 17 years and as Mayor for 8 years. Don enjoyed fishing, flea markets and garage sales. He loved vacationing in Florida and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Shafer, of West Chester, IA; daughter, Laurie Johnson and husband Jim of West Chester, IA; daughter, Glenda McIntire and special friend Wojciech of Wellman, IA; son, Donald J. "D.J." Shafer of West Chester, IA; step-daughter, Tamara Cook and husband Carl of Kaiser, MO; 3 grandsons: Joel and wife Stacie, Ethan and Evan; 2 step-grandchildren; Kayla and Dakota; 2 great-grandchildren: Jaron and Jaxon; sister, Peg Redlinger and husband Tom of Keota, IA; sister, Judy Manning and husband Lyle of Wayland, IA; sister, Shirley Miller and husband Bob of Washington, IA; brother, George "Bud" Shafer of Washington, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John "Butch" Shafer; 5 sisters: Sevillia Bixby, JoAnn Helfrich, Mary Lou Knebel, Betty Shafer and Virginia Shafer; and one grandson, Jason.
