Dean A. Slater, age 85, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Halcyon House in Washington.
Celebration of life services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the United Church of Crawfordsville with Pastor Jason Collier officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at the Crawfordsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the United Church of Crawfordsville, Crawfordsville American Legion Post 593, and the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund. Dean was born August 31, 1931 in Batavia, New York, the son of Erwin W. and Dorothy E. (Wall) Slater. He attended East Pembroke Central School and Corfu Central, from which he graduated in 1949. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy. Dean was united in marriage to Ruth Esther Krehbiel on June 29, 1952 in Donnellson, Iowa.
Dean lived in Key West until his discharge from the military and moved to Southeast Iowa. He was a grain and livestock farmer and he owned and operated Slater Hardware Plumbing and Heating in Crawfordsville with his wife. He later worked for Winfield Agri-Builders, TREES Ag Engineering Services in Winfield and M & H Services Ltd. in Mt. Pleasant. Upon retirement, Dean worked maintenance at IBP.
He was a member and Elder of the United Church of Crawfordsville, a member of the Schantz-Mitchell American Legion Post #593 and a member and longtime Correspondant of Henry Co. Voiture #661, 40/8. Dean served as First District Commander, American Legion, Department of Iowa for a year. He was also a member and Past Master of the Washington Lodge #26 AF & AM.
He is survived his daughter, Sharon Fontaine and husband Rob of Hopkinton, MA; daughter, Vicki Simester and husband Terry of Muscatine, IA; daughter, Rhonda Caton of Ft. Smith, AR; 3 grandsons; 1 granddaughter; and 3 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mildred Marble of Corfu, NY.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2016; daughter, Kay Slater in 1989; sister, Jane in 1939; and sister, June Culmo.
