On January 24, 1948, Dean was united in marriage to Lois Janet Meeks at Bethel Methodist Church in rural Keota. Dean and Janet moved to their farm north of Washington, where they raised their family and farmed together for more than 40 years. Janet preceded him in death in November of 1991. A few years later in 1994, Dean married Maymie Burkett Garringer and they moved from the farm to their home in Washington in 2005.

Dean's life was characterized by hard work, stewardship, and service to others. He considered it a great privilege to serve on the Washington Community School District School Board for many years. Dean was also a faithful member of the Marion Avenue Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. From his life long service at the church, to singing in the choir and small groups, to visiting home-bound people, to serving the school district, Dean made the world a better place through faithful service. Dean especially enjoyed the time he could spend with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
