Obituary

David LeRoy Roth, age 87, passed away on June 8, 2026, at Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.

David was born at home in Henry County on October 2, 1938, the son of Levi and Mayme (Wyse) Roth. He attended Flowers Country School and graduated from Wayland High School in 1957. Following high school, he continued his education and graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

On August 31, 1958, David was united in marriage to Dorothy I. Graber at Eicher Mennonite Church. They initially lived in Milwaukee before returning to the Wayland area, where David spent the remainder of his life. Together, David and Dorothy shared a beautiful life and raised four children.

David dedicated his entire career to farming his land and to the turkey industry. He ran live operations, hatcheries, and breeder farms. He was an active member of the Iowa Turkey Federation and spent 33 years working for Yoder Feeds. He thoroughly enjoyed planting the crops, watching them grow, and harvesting.

Faith and community were central to David’s life. He was baptized at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and later became a lifelong member of Wayland Mennonite Church, where he shared his faith and time by teaching Sunday School.

David’s greatest joy was his family. He and Dorothy cherished lake trips and eventually built a home at the lake, which became a favorite gathering place for hosting their children and grandchildren. David was a fixture at his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, and he always looked forward to family hot dog roasts.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorothy; three children: Vickie (Robert) Achen of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Michael (Maria) Roth of Wayland, IA, and Darin (Caren) Roth of Crawfordsville, IA; 15 grandchildren: Stephanie (Josh) Miller, Courtney (Alex) Achen, Brandon (Kira) Achen, Jared (Tawnya) Achen, Bryce (Meredith) Achen, Onalee (Ben) Irwin, Sophia Yousey, Aaron (Katie) Yousey, Lisa (Leno) Sorrento, Abbey (Bryce) Shelman, Christian (Jessica) Roth, Jackson (Karlee) Roth, Samuel Roth, Cate Roth, and Claire Roth; 20 great-grandchildren; and his brother-in-law, Al Early.

David was preceded in death by his parents; parents in-law, Elmer and Marie Graber; step mother-in-law, Florence; his daughter, Lori Roth-Yousey, and her husband, Thomas Roth-Yousey; his brother, Edward; his sister-in-law, Wilma Roth Leichty, and brother-in-law, Dallas Leichty; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Elmer and Ruth (Graber) Neff; his brother, James, and sister-in-law, Dianne Roth; his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Harold Boese; and his sister, Donna Early.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the Wayland Mennonite Church, with Pastor Michael Swartzendruber officiating. A private family interment will take place at Eicher Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the church, where the family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Wayland Mennonite Church and the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
