Darrell "Buzz" Chalupa's Obituary

Darrell Wayne “Buzz” Chalupa, age 92, of Wayland, Iowa, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the Washington County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Ainsworth Community Church with Pastor Jason Collier officiating. Calling hours will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Sonshine Ministry, the Ainsworth Community Church or the Iowa Donor Network. Online condolences may be sent for Buzz’s family at www.jonesfh.com.

Buzz was born on January 12, 1934, in Washington, Iowa, the son of George Albert and Nellie Marie (Schneider) Chalupa. He attended country school in Washington County and later attended Crawfordsville High School. Buzz was married to Delores Ann Kraft in 1960. They later divorced. He was then married to Wilma Bruegge.

Buzz worked construction in Wyoming and upon returning to Iowa, he farmed in the Washington area and worked for Knutson Construction in Iowa City. He worked for G.R. Miller Welding and Tiling until his retirement.

Buzz served honorably in the United States Navy. He enjoyed fishing for catfish, mushroom hunting, and scrapping. He enjoyed going to the Riverside Casino and socializing with friends at the Eagle’s nest. He enjoyed watching old western movies and football on TV.

He is survived by his son, Darrell (Denise) Chalupa of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Melody Scott of Grand Forks, North Dakota; daughter, Toni Hazelwood of Tiffin, Iowa; son, Ronnie (Elijah Nicholson) Chalupa of West Branch, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Katie (Jeff) DeJong, Tiffany (Zach Buck) Halvorson, Cody Scott, Jordan (Sydney) Scott, Molly Scott and significant other Nicholas Anderson, Rachel (Michael) Beach, Whitley (Dax) Daily, Clinton (Sydney) Tomas and Megan (Joe) Hugen; as well as 15 great grandchildren. Buzz is also survived by

siblings: Jean Jacoby of Buena Vista, California; JoAnn Swift of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Doug (Annette) Chalupa of Washington, Iowa; Carl Chalupa of Washington, Iowa; Gerry Farrier of Washington, Iowa; Vicki Anderson of Wayland, Iowa; sister-in-law, Virginia Chalupa of Washington, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Chris Tomas; sons-in-law, Jim Hazelwood and Gary Libenguth; sisters, Margaret (Bill) Fry, Marjorie (Elliott) McKinstry, Virginia (Richard) Houseal, Betty (Larry) Zehr, Donna (Jim) Marsh; brother, Ed Chalupa; an infant brother; sister-in-law, Martha Chalupa; and brothers-in-law, Ben Jacoby and Marion Swift.
