Obituary

Dale M. Smith, 89, of Washington, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a decline in health. Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington at a later date. A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association or to the McCreedy Home. Online condolences may be sent for Dale's family through the web at www.jonesfh.com . Dale was born May 17, 1922 near Wellman, Iowa son of George Milton and Eva D.(Ramsey) Smith. He attended school in Wellman. Dale was a Veteran of the United States Air Force with the rank of Corporal. Dale was united in marriage to Mary E. Custer on September 13, 1947 in Sigourney. He worked in electrical construction with the L.E. Meyers Company retiring in 1974. He was a member of I.B.E.W. for 65 years. Dale enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending quality time with his wife, children, grandsons & great grandson. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Dale is survived by his wife Mary E. Smith of Washington; son, Bruce A. Smith and wife Peg of Washington; daughter, Jan M. Wagenknecht and husband Rick of Washington; son, Roger D. Smith of Washington; and son, Kevin G. Smith and Deb Smith of Brighton; grandsons, Sean Wagenknecht and Jenny Simmering of Ainsworth; Ryan Wagenknecht and Ciara Dietrich of Washington; one great grandson, Paul Michael Wagenknecht of Washington. Surviving siblings include: Ruth Lamansky of Washington, Shirley Barwick of Davenport, Stanley Smith of Colorado & Harold Smith of California; brothers-in-law Dave Brinning of Washington; Wayne Wilson of Arizona; and Sister-in-law Ruth Woodward of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Aileen Shull, Donna Wilson, Norma Brinning, Evelyn Neff; and brothers, Donald Smith and Charles Smith.
