Colleen Phelps Havel, age 83, of Washington, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
A visitation will be held Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. A private interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date. Colleen was born November 17, 1934 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Arlo and Bertha Christine (Galle) Phelps. She graduated from Washington High School in 1952. Colleen was united in marriage to Leroy Havel in May of 1960 in Davenport, Iowa.
Colleen had lived her entire adult life in Washington. She worked for Mr. Crabill in the County Superintendent's Office from 1956-1963. She began working for the Washington Community School District while continuing her work at the County Superintendent's Office from 1969-1975. She worked for Grant Wood from 1975-1977 and finished her career as the secretary at the Washington Jr. High Guidance Office retiring in 1996. After retirement, Colleen helped her husband with his business. The couple enjoyed traveling to Tennessee once a year together. She also loved sewing, taking care of her flowers and caring for her cats.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy Havel of Washington, IA; twin sister, Corine Phelps of Washington, IA; brother, Charles Phelps and wife Lois of Winfield, IA; brother-in-law, Robert Havel and wife Pat of Washington, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents.
