Claudia Lucille Walterhouse, age 99, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Washington, Iowa, passed away peacefully just after midnight on December 3, 2016 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 6th at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Chris Arch officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Interment will take place at the Bremen Cemetery in Bremen, Indiana, at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 8th. Claudia was born November 24, 1917, in Taylorville, Illinois, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Oats) Howard. In 1933 she married Fred Boyd Peat and they had five children. In 1956, Claudia married Gerald Walterhouse and they had one son. Claudia lived in Taylorville, Illinois, and Portage, Indiana, for many years. She was an active member of Inland Manor Baptist Church in Portage. She moved to Washington, Iowa, in 1996 to be near her two youngest grandchildren. She attended Prairie Flower Baptist Church until she was unable to drive.
Claudia was a proficient seamstress, sewing many of her own clothes when she was younger; dresses and costumes for her grandchildren; and numerous quilts that will be cherished by her family.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Peat Sr. and wife Cheryl of Tovey, Illinois; Thomas "Mike" Peat of Washington, Iowa; and Donald Walterhouse and wife Maureen of Kalona, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
Claudia was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; son, Robert Peat; daughter, Laura Maniaci; an infant daughter, Janet Peat; two grandsons, Fritz Peat and Mike Maniaci; brother, William Mayon; and one sister, Cassie DeBoth.
