Charlane Mae Tanner, age 97, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the United Presbyterian Home or Hospice of Washington County. Online condolences may be sent for Charlane’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
Charlane was born October 22, 1928, in rural Hardin County, the daughter of Robert and Luella (Lang) Johns. She graduated from Eldora High School in 1947 where she was a four-year letter winner in basketball. Furthering her education, she went to the Mercy School of Nursing in Iowa City, where she graduated in 1950. She met her only love, Tom Tanner, and they were united in marriage on November 12, 1950, in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Charlane lived all her married life in Washington, Iowa, where she was Registered Nurse at the Washington County Hospital and the United Presbyterian Home. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and was very active with the Washington Volunteer Fire Department and their events. Charlane was a member of the Washington Golf and Country Club, and she spent many hours on the golf course. Most importantly, her faith and her family were her life.
She is survived by one daughter, Sally Tranberg of Clarksville, TN; two grandsons, Tommy (Brittnye) Tranberg of Clarksville, TN; and Timothy (Leah) Tranberg of Spring Hill TN. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Wyatt Thomas, Katherine Anne, Allison Reagan, and Abigail Jane Tranberg.
Charlane was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, in 2018; daughter, Jody, in 2020; son-in-law, Jim, in 2019; and siblings, Grace, Paul, Marvin, LaVonne, Pearl, Robert, Doug and Donna.
