Catherine Mary Mattes, age 100, of Washington, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 25, 2015 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 24, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Prayer services will be held 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. The family will also be receiving friends on Monday, May 25, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Catherine was born August 11, 1914 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Brack) Halsch. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Iowa City and the University of Iowa. Catherine was united in marriage to John J. Mattes on September 10, 1934 in Iowa City.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, DCCW, Catholic Daughters and Ladies Forrester. Catherine was President of the PTA and a Church Circle Leader. She enjoyed working with ceramics and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls fan. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Streb and husband Butch of Hills, Iowa; daughter, Kathleen Coleman and husband Ron of Urbandale, Iowa; son, Edward Mattes and wife Joyce of Kalona, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Westphal of Washington, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Rita Perry of Tennessee.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, John Mattes in 1993; brother, Joseph Halsch; sisters, Iona Mann and Marian Gaffey; son-in-law, Bill Westphal; great-granddaughter, Ellen Catherine; and great-grandsona, Edric and Noah.
