J. Carlton "Carty" Mangold, age 88, of Washington, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at his residence at Halcyon House.
Visitation will begin noon Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Private family services will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. John Carlton Mangold was born March 22, 1927 in Washington, Iowa, the son of George Harold and Hazel (Baker) Mangold. He graduated from Washington High School in 1946 and attended Washington Academy for two years. Carty was united in marriage to Marilyn Petersen on October 21, 1951 in Washington, Iowa.
Carty worked with his father in the family radiator shop and later owned and operated Mangold TV and Appliance from 1951 until 1989. He farmed near Ainsworth from 1954-1961. He was in the National Guard for seven years and the Army Reserve for three years. Carty served on the Ainsworth School Board, Planned Parenthood Board and the Washington Chamber of Commerce Board. He was a Washington City Councilman and a member of the Historical Society and Washington Noon Kiwanis. Carty was instrumental in preserving the Red Brick Schoolhouse and he also coordinated planting and maintaining flowers throughout Washington. He received Volunteer Awards from Iowa's Governor, Planned Parenthood and the Washington Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mangold of Washington, Iowa; son, Mark Mangold and wife Gretchen of Lakewood, WA; son, John Mangold and wife Julie of Washington, IA; daughter, Cathy McAvoy and husband Dana of Seattle, WA; daughter, Nancy Zear and husband Jeff of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren: Casey, Kyle, Kellen, Cale, Kaylee, Kristen, David Ryne and Katie; and four great-grandchildren.
Carty was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Kenton Mangold, and sister, Jean Minden.
