Obituary

Carol M. Coon, age 86, of Washington, passed away Monday, June 1, 2015 at the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.

A celebration of life service will be held Friday, June 5, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction with Rev. Dennis Coon and Rev. Christian Coon officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Interment will be held at Columbus City Cemetery in Columbus Junction. Memorials have been established for the American Heart Association and Washington County Hospice. Carol was born January 21, 1929 in Louisa County, Iowa near Winfield, the daughter of Edward Wilson and Imo Ivalue 'Ivy" (Dill) Fullerton. She attended Shellbark Country School and graduated from Columbus Junction High School. Carol was united in marriage to Robert J. Coon on December 24, 1944 at the United Presbyterian Church Manse in Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Carol has lived in Washington, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant, returning to Washington in 2006. She worked for the Jefferson County Ambulance service as an EMT and Paramedic. She later worked for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a CNA and then for Iowa City Hospice.

She is a member of Cotter Presbyterian Church, Shellbark Club and the First United Methodist Church Mission Community Quilting Group in Mt. Pleasant. Throughout her faith journey, Carol has participated in and led several church Bible Study Groups. She was very active with the American Heart Association and received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Iowa Heart Association. Carol was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed, quilting and making clothes for her family. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed taking care of her flowers. She loved to cook, bake and decorate cakes.

Carol is survived by her husband, Bob Coon of Washington, Iowa; son, John Daniel Coon of Iowa City, Iowa; son, David Coon and wife Lynn of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; son, Rev. Dennis Coon and wife Patty of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Cathy Kleese and husband John of Washington; son, Dr. Thomas Coon and wife Rhonda of Stillwater, Oklahoma; daughter, Cynthia Giannini and husband Joe of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; 12 grandchildren: Suzanne Sorensen and husband Eric; Rev. Christian Coon and wife Anne; Corey Coon and wife Ryan; Troy Kleese and wife Pam; Tracy Kleese and wife Amy; Tim Kleese and wife Amanda; Morgan Holtz and husband Craig; Travis Eichelberger and fiancé, Rubi Martinez; Ashley Ernst and husband Matt; Tyler Eichelberger; Robert Coon and fiancé, Emily Pacic; and Charles Coon; 14 great-grandchildren: Caroline and Ethan Coon; Rylin and Logan Kleese; Lincoln, Sophia and Abigail Kleese; Noah, Jack and Isaac Kleese; Jordan, Payton and Charlynn Holtz; Hannah Ernst and Channing Eichelberger; sister-in-law, Marjorie Fullerton; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and five siblings: Frank Fullerton, Evelyn Long, Lavon "Sam" Fullerton, Bonnie Raid and Catherine Story.
