Obituary

Carla Joan Carter, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the United Presbyterian Home under hospice care.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the United Methodist Church, with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke and Pastor Alyssa Nantt officiating. General calling hours will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County, the Washington Public Library, and PAWS & More Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be sent to Carla's family at www.jonesfh.com

Carla was born on February 18, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Bertha (Matthas) Guther. She graduated from Washington High School in 1949 and went on to attend the Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines, where she graduated in 1953. On June 14, 1953, Carla was united in marriage to Raymond Earl Carter in Des Moines.

Carla worked as a nurse at the Washington County Hospital, served as the school nurse for Highland, and was a nurse for Dr. Ahart for several years. She later became the manager of the Washington Medical Clinic, where she worked until her retirement in 1996. Carla was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving on various committees. She was also a proud member of P.E.O. Chapter OC, having been in the organization for 75 years. Carla volunteered at the hospital gift shop and was a regular blood donor throughout her life. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and traveling, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathi (Dan) Hill of Washington, Iowa; granddaughter, Abigail Holeton of Coralville, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Ava, Sevrin, and Kovin; and nephew, John (Kim) Carter of Washington, Iowa.

Carla was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray, in 2013; son, Brian, in 2017; brother-in-law, Robert Carter; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Carter.
