Obituary

Carl Richard Schmidt, age 68, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died Friday, December 9, 2016, at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside, Iowa, with Fr. David Brownfield and Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by a Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Mt. Carl was born January 23, 1948, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of August Otto and Agnes Frances (Rotenburger) Schmidt. He graduated from Highland High School in 1966 and received his Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of Iowa. Carl was married to Jan Edwards in 1971 and they had two children together. He had a long and successful career with John Deere and company for over 30 years. He had great pride in his children and seeing how they had become great parents too.

He was raised in the Riverside community and lived most of his adult life in the Quad Cities. Carl was a tremendous athlete in high school excelling in football, baseball and basketball. He was the Captain of the football team, Senior Class President and was on the National Honor Society. During his adult life Carl was an avid traveler, played softball and enjoyed running. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan, a sportsman and attended many NCAA Final Four's.

He is survived by his daughter, Heather Schmidt of Washington, Iowa; son, Tyler Schmidt and wife Natalie of Carmel, Indiana; five grandchildren: Zachary, Lauren, Carter, Jackson and Samantha; sister, Marie Gallagher of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; brother, LeRoy Schmidt and wife Judy of Brookfield, Wisconsin; sister, Marilyn Musser and husband Dick of Solon, Iowa; brother, Bill Schmidt and wife Beth of The Villages, Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bernard Schmidt and his wife Donna; brother-in-law, Fergal Gallagher and niece, Jackie Schmidt.

The family appreciates the care, kindness and love, Carl received from his second family at the Halcyon House.
