Robert Leroy "Bob" Bonar, age 76, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Washington. Calling hours will begin at noon on Friday, November 22nd at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery. Bob was born July 1, 1943 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Helen (Smylie) Bonar. He graduated from Washington High School in 1962 and attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Bob married Alberta Rathmel in 1963 in Washington, Iowa. They later divorced. He was united in marriage to Linda Shalla Kessler in November of 1997 in Washington, Iowa.
Bob lived most of his life in Washington, Iowa. He was a farmer north of Washington until his retirement in 2017. He also owned a tiling business and trucking business for many years. Bob was a 4-H leader for 18 years, past president of the Washington County Pork Producers and a member of the Iowa Master Pork Producers. He served on the Washington County Fair Board, the Washington County Extension Council and was the past president of the YMCA. Bob was a member of the Iowa International Harvester Collector Chapter #5, Wayland area Antique Tractor Club and the Corn County Cruisers. He was also a member of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 26, Palestine Commandry No. 2 Knights Templar in Iowa City, Iowa, Iowa City York Rite, and the Kaaba Temple in Davenport, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Bonar of Washington, IA, formerly of Iowa City, IA; daughter, Angi Kauffman and husband Robb of Davenport, IA; Son, Roger Crawford and wife Lisa of Washington, IA; son, Rick Bonar of Washington, IA; son, Robb Bonar and wife Trish of San Antonio, TX; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
