Obituary

Birdie Caroline Leavitt, age 93, of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, April 27, 2018 at the Halcyon House in Washington.

Celebration of life services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Chaplain Don Combs officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Birdie was born June 25, 1924 on a farm two miles east of Birmingham, Iowa, the daughter of Dale Calhoun and Hazel (Hootman) Bonnett. She graduated from high school in Birmingham in May 1942 and married Myrl Leavitt on August 20, 1942 in Memphis, Missouri.

Birdie lived in Washington since 1945. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. She was a homemaker and secretary for her husband's financial planning business. Birdie enjoyed sewing, cooking, jigsaw and cross word puzzles and reading. She was an avid patron of the Washington Public Library. Birdie and Myrl enjoyed traveling, especially to the Western United States and Hawaii.

She is survived by her sons: Richard Leavitt and wife Susan of Lansing, MI and David Leavitt and wife Judith of Coralville, IA; grandchildren: Kristine Shryock of New York City, NY; Joseph Levit and wife Preethi Mahadeviah of New York City, NY; and John Leavitt and wife Amy of Santee, CA; and three great-grandchildren: Jane and Jackson Leavitt of Santee, CA and Druv Levit of New York City, NY.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Myrl; her parents; sisters: Beryl (Fred) Brown and Mildred Bonnett; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Maurine and Fred Moore and Mary Louise and Orville Whitcanack.
