Obituary

Betty Jean Tobin, age 78, of Ainsworth, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday. Prayer services will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. A general memorial has been established. Betty was born September 21, 1936, in Washington County, Iowa, the daughter of Rudolph and Margaret (Burham) Schmidt. She attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1954. Betty was united in marriage to Leonard Patrick "Pat" Tobin on February 9, 1957, at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington. She was a life resident of rural Ainsworth having lived most of her life on the family's Century Farm.

Betty worked as a proof reader, type setter and copy editor at the Washington Evening Journal for twenty years. She later worked at Farmer's Mutual Insurance Company for 23 years as a policy clerk. Betty was a bookkeeper for Tobin Farms Inc. all of her married life and in 1997 began keeping books for Tobin Hog Farms.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church where she was active in the church circles and was a volunteer at Earthly Blessings. She was a volunteer for the Washington County Election Committee for almost 40 years. Betty enjoyed quilting, gardening and spending time outdoors. She loved her annual trips to the Iowa State Fair and camping with her family. She was a member of the Ainsworth Sasha Club and enjoyed playing cards with her local friends. She was a 4-H Leader and Cub Scout Den mother for several years. Betty loved to bake, cook and was known for keeping a meticulous house. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan. She participated in her husband's tractor hobby and would ride along on "Tractorcade".

Betty is survived by her husband, Pat Tobin of Ainsworth, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Butterbaugh of Cedar Falls, Iowa; daughter, Carol Moellers and husband Dr. John of Greene, Iowa; son, Paul Tobin of Ainsworth, Iowa; two grandchildren, John Paul Moellers and wife Lacey of Ames, Iowa; and Joseph Patrick Moellers of Ames, Iowa. Betty is also survived by her sister, Bess Llewellyn and husband Leonard of Washington, Iowa, and their children, Peg Neff of Columbia, Missouri and David Llewellyn of Manchester, Missouri; sister-in-law, Letha Schmidt of Mesa, Arizona; and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Greene of Emmetsburg, Iowa .

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Harold Schmidt.
